House Speaker John Boehner decided to resign from being speaker of the house a day after shedding tears while listening to Pope Francis lecture Congress. Boehner will leave Congress in October instead of continuing his efforts to avoid a government shutdown forced by a growing movement in his party to defund Planned Parenthood.

Getting rid of Boehner is a "victory for the crazies," Rep. Pete King, a New York Republican, told Politico.

The resignation throws the GOP majority in the House into turmoil, according to the New York Times.

Boehner talked to reporters about his decision on Friday, September 25, 2015. "The first job of any speaker is to protect this institution that we all love," Boehner said. "It was my plan to only serve as Speaker until the end of last year, but I stayed on to provide continuity to the Republican Conference and the House. It is my view, however, that prolonged leadership turmoil would do irreparable damage to the institution. To that end, I will resign the Speakership and my seat in Congress on October 30."

"What a day," the speaker tweeted a day earlier after spending several hours with Pope Francis during his historic visit to the U.S. capitol.
