The chief spokesman for the Republican Party invoked "My Little Pony" in his defense of Melania Trump on accusations that she plagiarized Michelle Obama's 2008 convention speech in her own address.

RNC spokesman Sean Spicer told MSNBC Tuesday that the words used by Donald Trump's wife are also similar to words of the character "Twilight Sparkle," not just of the current first lady.

"Melania Trump said, 'the strength of your dreams and willingness to work for them.' Twilight Sparkle from 'My Little Pony' said, 'This is your dream. Anything you can do in your dreams, you can do now,' " Spicer said.

Musicians John Legend and Kid Rock have also sung similar phrases, Spicer said.

"I mean if we want to take a bunch of phrases and run them through a Google and say, 'Hey, who else has said them,' I can do that in five minutes," Spicer said. "And that's what this is."

The unusual reference to the children's cartoon character sent "My Little Pony" soaring as a trending term on Twitter Tuesday afternoon.
