If you've spent 10 hours binging on "Making a Murderer," as did millions of Americans in recent weeks, you might want to spend another 30 minutes hearing what his ex-girlfriend is now saying about Steven Avery.
"Behind closed doors, he's a monster," Jodi Stachowski told HLN's Natisha Lance. The full interview as aired on the Nancy Grace Show is posted above. Stachowski, who says documentary producers ignored her request not to be included in the Netflix series, believes Avery is guilty of killing Teresa Haibach.
"I wanted nothing to do with it," she said. Video of her walking hand-in-hand with Avery and jail phone calls were pretend under the threat of violence, she now claims. "If i didn't say anything good and nice about him I'd pay," she said. "He'd beat me.... It was all an act, he told me how to act, smile and be happy. I didn't want to get hurt."
She says she was never in love with Avery and only stayed with him because of his threats and she had no place to go. "He told me once if I did leave them that he'd burn down my mom's house with them and my daughter in it."
She testified in Avery's murder trial that Avery did not sound rushed in a 15-minute phone call with him during the hour he was allegedly raping and killing Haibach, but she told HLN that it did sound "like he was lying or hiding something."
Avery had a vendetta against all women because of the 18 years he spent in prison for a 1984 rape conviction that DNA evidence and another man's confession later proved false, she said. "He told me once that all bitches owed him because of the one that sent him to prison."
