George ZImmerman's plan to raise thousands of dollars by auctioning the pistol he used to kill Trayvon Martin in 2012 has been derailed. The auction website where Zimmerman listed the handgun for sale has pulled the listing just as the bidding was set to start Thursday, Lead Stories has confirmed.

"The firearm for sale is the firearm that was used to defend my life and end the brutal attack from Trayvon Martin on 2/26/2012," Zimmerman's listing said.

It described the gun as a "piece of American history" that even the Smithsonian had sought for a museum exhibit. The Smithsonian denied in a tweet Thursday that it ever "express interest" in the infamous firearm.
