Chicago police officer Jason Van Dyke surrendered to authorities Tuesday after he was charged with first degree murder in the dead of Laquan McDonald, the teen killed in October 2014, according to the Cook County, Illinois, prosecutor's office.

Chicago is bracing for the release of the dash cam video of McDonald's shooting, which a judge ordered released by Wednesday. City officials have been meeting with community leaders ahead of the release concerning the video.

The Associated Press quotes people who have seen the video saying it shows McDonald, 17, carrying a small knife but walking away from police when Van Dyke opened fire from about 15 feet. He continued shooting after the teen fell to the ground, the report said.

Officer McDonald, who has been assigned a desk job since the shooting, was due in court for an initial appearance Tuesday afternoon.
