Doug Giles, a regular panelist on FOX News, posted a meme on his Facebook page suggesting that Donald Trump chose Gen. James "Mad Dog" Mattis as part of a plan to "exterminate" Muslims.

Mattis is Trump's nominee to be the U.S. defense secretary. He retired from the U.S. Marines in 2013. The Obama administration considered him to eager to go to war with Iran, according to former Obama Defense Secretary Leon Panetta.

Giles' post, which has been widely shared by Trump followers, did not distinguish between law-abiding, patriotic American Muslims and the middle eastern terrorist kind. Under that scenario, Khizr and Ghazala Khan, the Muslim parents whose son was killed in action while serving in the U.S. military, would presumably be rounded up and exterminated.

Giles did not create the meme. It first gained social media traction in December when it was posted by former Florida Republican Congressman Allen West.
