Fact Check: Senator Amy Klobuchar Is NOT One Of The Wealthiest Women In America Not Enough $$

Has Amy Klobuchar, D-Minnesota, become "one of the wealthiest women in America," during her tenure in the United States Senate, as a social media post claims? No, that's not true: Financial disclosure reports show that with a net family worth of at most $2.5 million, she's not even among the wealthiest women in Congress, let alone in America. Magazines and financial data companies that specialize in lists of the wealthiest Americans show that more than 100 American women are worth more than $1 billion - 400 times wealthier than Klobuchar.

The claim appeared in a September 2, 2025 post on X.com (archived here) on the @17QStorm account under the title "Amy Klobuchar walked into Congress $40,000 in debt.". It opened:

14 years later... she's magically one of the wealthiest women in America. There's no way that happened on a Senator's salary. The swamp pays its loyal soldiers VERY well. Follow Follow my Telegram for more! t.me/+RXtopMt9TUozZ

U.S. senators are required to list their assets and liabilities in a form that is available to the public under the Ethics in Government Act, (archived here) which permits people to judge if senators are using their position to gain or protect wealth. The latest available form shows which assets belong to the senator, which are jointly held with a spouse and which belong to the spouse. Further complicating analysis, the Senate form does not amount to a list with specific values. Instead, the values are listed in ranges from $1,000 to $15,000, $15,000 to $50,000, $50,000 to $100,000 and so on.

Congressional comparisons

In the most recent report for Klobuchar, covering 2024, (archived here) her personal and jointly-held assets add up to between $31,000 and $115,000, while those attributed to her husband add up to between $1.3 million and $3 million. The couple's liabilities, loans and two mortgages, also reported in ranges, add up to between $500,000 and $1,265,000. At most, Klobuchar and her husband would be worth $2.5 million, if all their assets were worth the top of the range and all liabilities at the bottom of the reporting range.

A variety of groups estimate wealth from the disclosure forms and none of those lists place Klobuchar at the top. The wealthiest senator, Rick Scott of Florida, is worth about $549 million as of 2025, according to analysis by Investopedia (archived here). In the House, former Speaker Nancy Pelosi and her husband, venture capitalist Paul Pelosi, are worth about $230 million, Investopedia found (archived here).

Klobuchar compared to American women

When Forbes Magazine, long the keeper of one list of America's wealthiest people (archived here), went looking for women who are billionaires in 2025, they found 38, plus a long list of women worth hundreds of millions. Klobuchar's savings don't approach either of those categories.

The latest Federal Reserve Bank survey, in 2022, (archived here) of consumer finances found a growing number of American families have million-dollar fortunes in the range reported by Klobuchar: about 23.7 million families.
