Does the photo circulating on social media show Renee Nicole Good, the woman shot and killed by ICE in Minneapolis Jan. 7, 2025? No, that's not true: This is not a picture of Good, but another woman who attended Old Dominion University at the same time. Both women were awarded poetry prizes in 2020 and their photos appeared separately in a Facebook post from the ODU English Department naming them both. Lead Stories reached out to the woman pictured in the social media post, who confirmed that it is her in the photo and not Good.
One example of the mislabeled photo appears in a post (archived here) published on X on Jan. 7, 2026 by @RpsAgainstTrump. It is captioned:
JUST IN: Renee Nicole Good, 37, has been identified as the woman shot and killed by an ICE agent in Minneapolis.
Her mother, Donna Ganger, told the Minnesota Star Tribune that her daughter "was probably terrified" when she tried to drive away and that she was "not part of anything like that at all," referring to protests against ICE.
This is the photo included with the post:

On April 1, 2020 the Old Dominion University English Department made a lengthy post (archived here) on Facebook announcing the 2020 ODU College poetry prizes. Included in this post (pictured below left) were individual portrait photos of the five prize winners and the judge. When these photos are opened individually, they are captioned with the name of the person and the award. Lead Stories reached out to the woman named in the photo (below center). She confirmed that it is her and asked to not be named in this article. The photo on the right is captioned:
Renée Macklin, Undergraduate Winner

On Jan. 7, 2026 the President of ODU, Brian O. Hemphill, Ph.D., published a statement (archived here) regarding the death of alumna Renee (Macklin) Good. He wrote in part:
It is with great sadness that Old Dominion University mourns the loss of one of our own, Renee (Macklin) Good, a proud Monarch who graduated in December of 2020 from the College of Arts and Letters with a degree in English. Following Renee's tragic killing earlier today in Minneapolis, our thoughts and prayers are with her family, friends, loved ones, and the Monarch Nation.
