Was Charli XCX sitting with a stone face and barely clapping while Taylor Swift was on stage at the 2026 MTV VMAs? No, that's not true: Video from the VMA X account shows Charli XCX with no expression and tapping her knee during a Nirvana award. The video posted on X by a self-described satire account was edited combining two different moments to show Charli XCX as if she was reacting during Swift's speech.
The claim appeared in a post (archived here) by the @petaltrin account on X on Sept. 27, 2026. It read:
charlie xcx's face while taylor swift was presenting at the vmas.... 😭😭

The footage of Charli XCX with a stone face and tapping her knee with one hand happened when the surviving members of the band Nirvana were on stage at the Sept. 27, 2026, MTV VMAs receiving the Video Vanguard Award. Video showing Charli XCX's reaction was posted on the @vmas X account (archived here). She is shown at 1:14 in the video as this screenshot of the post at the time of writing shows:
