Joe Biden's chances of joining the 2016 race for the Oval Office got a boost during a White House lunch meeting with President Obama, according to "a senior Democrat" quoted by CNN and other media.
The perception that Hillary Clinton's campaign is lagging amid the e-mail controversy and a stronger-than-expected challenge from Bernie Sanders has raised speculation that Vice President Biden would announce his candidacy. A decision could now come in late September or early October, one source said.
While a Biden aide declined to confirm what went on during the Obama-Biden lunch, a senior Democrat is reported by CNN as saying that Obama gave his "blessing" to Biden if he decided to run.
Biden has held a series of private meetings with key Democrats in recent days, including a secret face-to-face with Elizabeth Warren, the Massachusetts senator many liberal Democrats would prefer to see in the race.
Biden has spent much of the summer grieving the illness and death of his son Beau Biden. Sources close to Biden have been quoted saying that his son's death bed request to his father was that he run for president.
Another report says while Biden is leaning toward running, he is waiting for his wife Jill Biden to accept his decision.
