Fact Check: WNBA Star Angel Reese Did NOT Call For A Boycott Of American Eagle Over Sydney Sweeney's Jeans Ad Made-Up Story

Did WNBA star Angel Reese call for a boycott of American Eagle over their jeans ad with Sydney Sweeney? No, that's not true: There is no record of Reese ever making such a statement about American Eagle or a boycott. The quote attributed to Reese in the post is also fabricated, as there is no publicly available evidence she ever called for a boycott over Sweeney's jeans ad. The image of Reese used in the post is digitally altered.

The claim appeared in a post where it was published on Facebook on August 14, 2025. It opened:

WNBA star Angel Reese has called for a MASSIVE boycott of American Eagle, denouncing the brand's latest ad campaign featuring actress Sydney Sweeney as "disgusting and disrespectful to black culture.

This is what the post looked like on Facebook at the time of writing:

The image in the post included this caption:

American Eagle Should Remember That I Have 3 BILLION Fans Around The World

There is no record of Reese, a player on the Chicago Sky WNBA team, ever having made the comments about a boycott of American Eagle over their Sydney Sweeney jeans commercial.

Lead Stories searched Google News' index of thousands of news websites (archived here) and found no reports of Reese making any comments about American Eagle or a boycott or Sydney Sweeney. Similarly, the Yahoo! News index of partner news sites and news services showed zero reports of a boycott of American Eagle over the Sydney Sweeney jeans ad (archived here).

There was controversy surrounding American Eagle's "Sydney Sweeney has great jeans" ad, as HuffPost reported (archived here), but there is no evidence that Reese ever mentioned the ad or called for a boycott of the brand.

The image used of Reese has been digitally altered to add a mustache to her face. The original photo, published on Sports Illustrated (archived here), shows no mustache, as seen here:

Other social media accounts posted the same image and claims, as this post on X.com (archived here) shows:
