Fact Check: Mexican President DID Acknowledge Trump's Victory In US Election Recognized Win

Did the president of Mexico say she won't recognize Donald Trump as president as of November 7, 2024? No, that's not true: Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum did acknowledge Trump's victory on her official X account on November 6, 2024. She said, "my most sincere congratulations to Donald Trump, who won the presidential election of the United States of America."

The claim appeared in a post and video (archived here) on X on November 7, 2024. The video's caption said:

The President of Mexico just said she won't recognize Trump as the winner of the elections yet.

That's fine, but you'll recognize him when he puts 75% tariffs on everything from your country.

What a dumb move she's making here.

The video clip of Sheinbaum in the social media post is from early morning on November 6, 2024, before the U.S. presidential race had been called by news organizations. She said:

There is news that President Trump won, but in any case we are going to wait today for the vote count to end in some states before we issue an official statement.

That afternoon, Sheinbaum recognized Trump's victory, using her official X account (archived here). She said (translated from Spanish by Google):

I would like to express my most sincere congratulations to Donald Trump, who won the presidential election of the United States of America. On behalf of Mexico, we would like to acknowledge the American people for their democratic exercise during their election campaign.

I am certain that we will continue to work together in a coordinated manner, with dialogue and respect for our sovereignties, to advance the broad bilateral agenda that links us.
