Fact Check: Video Does NOT Show Piera Mosque In Barcelona On Fire -- 2022 Footage From Jakarta, Indonesia Jakarta 2022

Does a viral video show Piera Mosque in Barcelona, Spain on fire? No, that's not true: The viral footage with a caption about Spaniards burning "Piera Mosque" in that city actually shows a fire in Indonesia. That fire happened in Jakarta in 2022 during a renovation mishap. A fire did take place in a mosque in Piera on July 14, 2025 but it was much smaller than the one in the footage.

The video appeared in a post on X (archived here) where it was published on July 14 with a caption that read:

🚨PIERA MOSQUE IN BARCELONA IS ON FIRE

The Spanish do not want to be conquered again

The video featured a caption that read:

However the video in question has been online since at least 2022, for example here (archived here) where it was described as:

Or, as translated by Google Translate from Indonesian:

Reporting by CNBC (archived here) indeed confirmed there was such a fire in Jakarta, Indonesia in 2022.

Local media in Spain did report on a fire in a mosque in Piera on July 14, 2025 (archived here) but it was of a much smaller scale and did not involve a dome burning down and collapsing. Translated, the story read:

The Mossos d'Esquadra (Catalan police) are investigating whether the fire at the Piera Mosque (Barcelona), which has not yet been inaugurated, was arson-related. The incident, which affected the interior of the temple, occurred in the early hours of Friday morning when, at around 3:30 a.m., the fire department was alerted to flames that were spreading throughout the entire nave.

A few minutes later, emergency personnel managed to extinguish the fire, and ruled out any injuries. This Monday, Catalan Interior Minister Núria Parlon explained that the Catalan Police's General Information Commission (CGI) has taken over the investigation and that, for the time being, they cannot rule out arson.
