Did New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani post on X in September 2025 that he, Mamdani, had an interview with conservative activist Charlie Kirk shortly before his assassination? No, that's not true: At the time, Mamdani hadn't taken office yet and, thus, he didn't have access to the official account of the New York City Mayor on X whose images were shared on social media. The post in question was published by the administration of the previous mayor, Eric Adams.
The claim originated from a post (archived here) on X where it was published on Sept. 10, 2025, by the @NYCMayor account. It read:
I interviewed with Charlie Kirk just last month, and I saw a passionate young man who loved his country. Devastated to now learn of his assassination. Political violence has no place in our nation. We must turn down the temperature and stand united against hate. I pray for Charlie's family and loved ones.
This is what the post looked like on X at the time of writing:

Mamdani, however, took office more than three months after this post's publication -- on January 1, 2026 (archived here). As of the September of the previous year, the @NYCMayor account reflected positions of the previous mayor, Eric Adams (archived here).
In the aftermath of Kirk's death on Sept. 10, 2025 (archived here), multiple media organizations covered public figures' reactions to the assassination. One of them, New York City local TV station WPIX (archived here), also known as Channel 11 and PIX 11, published an article (archived here) that not only cited the post in question but also attributed it to Adams.
An archived version of the page, seen here and here, showed that the post that is the focus of this fact check originally displayed the name and the profile picture of Mamdani's predecessor.
Furthermore, the former mayor also published a recording (archived here) of that conversation with Kirk on his account on Facebook.
A search across episodes of Kirk's show didn't confirm (archived here) he interviewed Mamdani, who was still a mayoral candidate at the time of Kirk's death. In September 2025, Mamdani condemned the assassination of Charlie Kirk (archived here) and said that the same "shared notion of humanity" applies to killings of Palestinians. A search on Google News for mentions of the purported interview featuring Kirk and Mamdani produced no media articles confirming its existence (archived here).
