Fact Check: 80,000 French Students Did NOT Go Missing During Protests -- Mass Graves Were NOT Spotted From Space Satire Label

Did 80,000 French students go missing in 72 hours amid protests, and were their mass graves spotted from space? No, none of that is true: The account that published the rumor later said that it was satire. No news outlet reported anything remotely close.

The claim appeared in a post (archived here) on X where it was published by @IRAN_GHANA on Oct. 3, 2026. It opened:

BREAKING: Leaked intel shows French regime has completely lost control. Mass graves near Lyon, Marseille and Lille now visible from space. Over 80,000 French students vanished in 72 hours. Hospitals ordered to not admit wounded protesters. Cabinet already in Switzerland begging for asylum. This is a full-scale genocide against its own people. Where is the international community?

This is what the post looked like on X at the time of writing:

The @IRAN_GHANA (archived here) account linked to the official Iranian embassy's page, but showed a blue verification checkmark that can be obtained (archived here) through premium subscription. As reported by France 24 (archived here), it was one of the Iranian foreign ministry's social media accounts that shifted its external communication strategy away from official talking points and toward publishing memes mocking U.S. President Donald Trump (archived here) in the spring of 2026, attracting notable attention from online audiences.

In this particular case, the @IRAN_GHANA spelled out (archived here) on Oct. 4, 2026, that the post concerning the supposed mass graves was meant to be satire:

It is humbling that some missed the satire, and consulted @grok, which missed it too.

In September 2026, France witnessed a wave of student protests over the conditions of the school system (archived here). By Oct. 5, 2026, it had escalated (archived here), resulting in clashes with police and injuries on both sides and multiple arrests.

Lead Stories used DeepL to translate keywords into French and searched for them on Google News France, but it returned zero recent media coverage (archived here) confirming the purported recent disappearance of 80,000 students or any sightings of new mass graves in any way related to the fall 2026 protests.
