Fact Check: Texas Governor's X Account Was NOT Suspended After Midterm Elections -- Account @GovAbbott Defunct Since 2025 Ended In 2025

Did X suspend the account of Texas Gov. Greg Abbott after the 2026 midterm elections? No, that's not true: The X account in question, @GovAbbott, was suspended between Feb. 12 and March 8, 2025 -- not after the Nov. 3, 2026, midterm elections. The account appears to have been an official account of the Texas Governor's office at one time, with a gray checkmark and posts mirrored by the verified and still operational account of the Governor Abbott Press Office.

The claim appeared in a post (archived here) by the @iwillnotbesilenced account on Bluesky on Nov. 4, 2026. It read:

THE OFFICIAL X ACCOUNT OF TEXAS GOVERNOR GREG ABBOTT HAS BEEN SUSPENDED BY THE PLATFORM. 😂 🤣 😂

This is what the post looked like on Bluesky at the time of writing:

At the time of writing, on Nov. 5, 2026, the @GovAbbott account on X does show that notice (archived here). It reads:

Greg Abbott
@GovAbbott
Account suspended
X suspends accounts which violate the X Rules

It is not clear why this account is suspended. Lead Stories contacted Abbott's press office and will update this article if we receive a reply. Currently the active Abbott account is @GregAbbott_TX (archived here).

Lead Stories searched the Internet Archive to see past records of the suspended account's activity. There is not an archive for every day. The archived pages show the same "Account suspended" message going back to May 25, 2025 (archived here). Going back even further, between April 23, 2025 (archived here) and March 8, 2025 (archived here), the archived pages show a different message with a poodle sitting in a chair (pictured below). The message reads:

Nothing to see here
Looks like this page doesn't exist. Here's a picture of a poodle sitting in a chair for your trouble.

This is how the @GovAbbott account on X appeared when it was archived on March 8, 2025:

The Internet Archive has no more archives of the @GovAbbott account until Feb. 5, 2025 (archived here). At the time of writing this archive page was not loading anything, no message or account activity.

Another archiving service, archive.today, has the @GovAbbott account archived on only two days, Feb. 12, 2025 (archived here) and Jan. 29, 2025 (archived here). These appear to show a functioning verified account with a gray checkmark (archived here) reserved for governments and multilateral organizations. This narrows down the timeline for when the @GovAbbott account was deactivated: between Feb. 12, 2025 -- when it was last archived live (pictured below) -- and March 8, 2025, when it was first archived with the poodle message (pictured above).

On Feb. 12, 2025, the Governor Abbott Press Office, @GovAbbottPress, also with a gray checkmark, posted the same announcement as the @GovAbbott account (pictured above). This post is still up on the active X account of Abbott's Press Office (embedded below). These gray checkmarks and the parallel posting on the same day leave little doubt that on Feb. 12, 2025, both accounts were run by the Texas governor's office.
