Ben Carson hopes to bolster his international policy credentials with a quick trip to the middle east to meet face-to-face with refugees of the Syrian civil war. The Republican presidential candidate left the United States for Jordan Thanksgiving night, his campaign confirmed Friday.
Carson has been criticized for his responses to questions in recent weeks about the Syrian crisis, including one comment in which he compared the refugees to "rabid dogs."
He was a frontrunner along with Donald Trump in many of the polls, although his standings have dropped significantly as terrorism has risen as a major concern among voters.
Carson, who is a retired neurosurgeon, is expected to return to the United States on Sunday.
