In a bizarre turn of events, a brave store clerk is confronted with a gun but refuses to give the armed robber money. The clerk is shown reprimanding the thief and eventually convincing him to put his gun away in exchange for some cash.
"I've never seen anything like this," said Greenwood's Assistant Police Chief Matthew Fillenwarth. "That's what he told the investigating officers, 'I was telling him this is wrong, what you're doing'."
"He's telling him to get out and now he's lecturing him. He's pointing his finger, like a parent would," Fillenwarth explained, showing Eyewitness News the video. "He starts lecturing the robbery suspect on how what he's doing is wrong and people work hard for their money and he shouldn't be stealing."
When the thief tries to come behind the register, the clerk shows no sign of backing down.
"He's telling him you get back out from behind this counter. You don't belong here," Fillenwarth said.
Later, the robber tries getting in the register himself. But again, he's stopped and scolded.
"He's punching the buttons now and the clerk is holding the drawer shut, so it won't come open," Fillenwarth said. "The clerk is not intimidated. Then look, he says, 'you step back, you put the gun away and I'll give you some money.' The suspect complies and even throws his arms out, like 'look okay, see, I put the gun out, give me some money now'."
Six minutes into the encounter, the gunman runs off with an undisclosed amount of cash.
