Twitter Suspends 125,000 ISIS Related Accounts

  • by: Perry Sanders III

Twitter announced on Friday afternoon that it has suspended at least 125,000 accounts that are related to the Islamic State in Iraq and Syria since mid-2015.

The suspensions come in a continued effort to combat the misuse of social media to promote violence. Twitter has been under increased pressure from the US government to lead the online battle against terrorist organizations through vigilantly deleting ISIS associated accounts.

We condemn the use of Twitter to promote terrorism and the Twitter Rules make it clear that this type of behavior, or any violent threat, is not permitted on our service.

Twitter has always promoted "the ability of users to share their views freely - including views that some people may disagree with or find offensive", but have made it clear that terrorism will not be condoned or facilitated whatsoever.

Last year, Twitter explicitly banned statements "threatening or promoting" terrorism. Prior to this announcement, Twitter had deleted at least 1,000 ISIS supporting accounts within a four month period.
