Fake New: NO Horror in NYC - ISIS Did NOT Launch a Terror Attack in NYC

Fact Check

  • by: Maarten Schenk

Several fake news sites have published an article titled "HORROR IN NYC - ISIS Launches TERROR Attack in NYC!", presumably in an effort to cause mass panic.

We've seen several versions of this story pop up over the last few hours. The weird thing is, the actual article under the title makes no mention at all about an ongoing terror attack, it only speaks about two muslims who alledgedly plead guilty 'last week' of conspiring to aid the Islamic State:

Since the moment President Trump signed his executive order on the travel ban, progressives have been saying that Muslim immigrants are not a real threat to the U.S. However, reality speaks the truth, and what recently happened in NYC just proves how delusional liberals really are.

A couple of Muslims in New York plead guilty last week to allegations of conspiring to aid the Islamic State and planning to set off a pressure-cooker bomb in the city. According to CNN, Munther Omar Saleh, 21, of Queens, and Fareed Mumuni, 22, of Staten Island were "conspiring and attempting to provide material support" to the Islamic State and attacking federal officers.

Mumuni was also charged with "attempted murder of federal officers" relating to an incident in which he stabbed an FBI official as law enforcement officials carried out a search warrant at his home a couple of years ago.

At least that part is true, according to CNN. But the part about ISIS launching an attack, as mentioned in the title? That's a total hoax. Also, the websites redcountry.us and conservativearmy88.com which are helping to spread the story seem to be part of a network of fake sites centered around The Resistance: The Last Line of Defense, an (in)famous fake news website.

This network of sites all seem to repost the same articles mentioning it as the source but not acknowlediging the satire disclaimer on the main site. This causes many people to believe the fake stories especially when they are being shared on social media where even more context is removed and only the title, image and description remain. Sites in the network appear to include:

It is unclear at this time if the story originated from within the network or if they are just 'borrowing' it from another source. In the mean time, be vigilant and warn others that might be scared because of this hoax story...
