Fact Check: British Singer Sam Smith Is NOT 'Self-Partnered' -- Originated On Satirical Facebook Page Joke Account

Is British singer Sam Smith "self-partnered," meaning that they are not single but in a relationship with themselves? No, that's not true: The claim originated on a satirical Facebook page with a clear disclaimer. There is no evidence that Smith ever made that declaration about their dating status, as of this writing.

The claim appeared in a post (archived here) on Facebook on February 18, 2025. It said:

Sam Smith is reportedly SELF-PARTNERED which means that they is not single but they is actually in a relationship with themselves

This is what the post looked like on Facebook at the time of writing:

The Social Laughs Facebook page (archived here) where the post appeared is a humor page with details about the Bound and Gagged comedy tour (archived here) in the profile picture.

The claim about Smith was posted in November 2024 on the Wakefield News Facebook page (archived here), a self-described satire account, with the intro stating, "A news page for people who like a laugh. Nothing on this page is serious. Parody account," as this screenshot shows:

The post has almost exactly the same wording as the February 2025 post, as this screenshot shows:

Lead Stories searched Google News for news reporting mentioning the words "Sam Smith" and "self partnered," but no such stories were returned (archived here) about the British singer being in a relationship with themselves.

The New York Times reported (archived here) that Smith was dating fashion designer Christian Cowan in 2024, and there is no evidence they had broken up as of publication date.

At the time this was written, Snopes and SportsKeeda.com had reviewed the same claim.
