Fact Check: UK Government Did NOT Announce New 'Window Tax' No Such Tax

Did the UK government or Chancellor of the Exchequer Rachel Reeves institute a levy on windows consisting of a £3.70 monthly fee on each, as of May 13, 2025? No, that's not true: No official sources made such an announcement. The window tax was abandoned in the U.K. by the mid-19th century.

The claim appeared in a post (archived here) on TikTok where it was published on April 28, 2025. It opened:

BREAKING

Absurd!' Rachel Reeves to tax'

privately owned homes

'window tax' Which will be

added to council tax payments. £3.70 per window

per house, per month. This will

take action as from the August

2025.

This is what the post looked like on TikTok at the time of writing:

However, a Google search (archived here) across the official account of the press office at UK's HM Revenue and Customs on X (archived here) showed no announcements mentioning the word "window":

A search across the UK's government websites for the keywords seen here (archived here) did not produce relevant results confirming the introduction of the supposed tax in 2025.

A search across Google News (archived here) showed no credible reports about it, either:

According to the website of the U.K. Parliament (archived here), the window tax was introduced in England in 1696 but was repealed in 1851.
