Teflon Don Rises: Trump Jumps In Poll After McCain Controversy

  • by: Alan Duke

Donald Trump's controversial comments about John McCain's hero status apparently did not hurt -- and may have boosted -- his standing in the Republican race for president, according to the latest CNN/ORC national poll published Sunday.

Trump was the choice of 18% of GOP voters, with Jeb Bush following at 15% and Scott Walker at 10%. The billionaire does even better among voters who said they've narrowed their choices down to one or two candidates, according to the CNN poll. He has 24%, while Bush is at 16% and Walker at 10%.

This bump for Trump seems to defy conventional political wisdom, considering how cable network panelists almost uniformly predicted his suggestion that McCain was no hero just because he was a Vietnam War POW for five years.
