Kim Davis, the Rowan County, Kentucky, clerk who invoked "God's authority" to defy a federal court order to issue same-sex marriage licenses, was found in contempt of court and sent to jail Thursday, September 3, 2015.
U.S. District Judge David Bunning ordered marshals to lock Davis up until she agreed take marriage applications from all couples as he previously ordered.
Davis, who appeared before the judge Thursday, said her "conscience will not allow it. God's moral law convicts me and conflicts with my duties."
Judge Bunning said Davis' "good-faith belief is simply not a viable defense. Oaths mean things."
Two men who Davis denied a license on Monday filed a contempt of court motion with Bunning, who two weeks earlier ordered her to comply with the Supreme Court ruling legalizing same-sex marriages. The U.S. Supreme Court recently denied a request by Davis for a temporary injunction of the federal order so her lawyers would have more time to challenge it.
Davis, an Apostolic Christian, told the couple she acting "under God's authority."
And this is the view of the religious freedom crowd. Definitely more people from this side. pic.twitter.com/QtRIHk8bdo
