The multitude of men, women and children flowing northwest from Greece and Hungary into the wealthier parts of Europe should get shelter at Catholic parishes, convents and monasteries, Pope Francis said Sunday.
"Every parish, every religious community, every monastery, every sanctuary of Europe, take in one family" Francis made his appeal during Sunday Angelus in St Peter's Square.
"Faced with the tragedy of tens of thousands of refugees that flee death in conflict and hunger and are on a journey of hope, the Gospel calls us to be close to the smallest and to those who have been abandoned, to give them concrete hope," Francis said in weekly remarks to Catholic pilgrims in the Vatican's St. Peter's Square.
Thousands of migrants fleeing death from war and starvation in Syria were crossing into Germany and Austria after an epic march through Hungary.
Citing the example of Mother Teresa, who dedicated her life to caring for India's poorest, Francis said the Vatican will take in two refugee families.
War is the mother of all poverty, a vast predator of lives and souls.
