Fake News: Florida Man NOT Arrested For Hanging On Traffic Light And Sh*tting On Cars Passing Underneath

Was a man named Roy Stern arrested after defecating on passing cars while hanging from a traffic light? And was he under the influence of meth and cannabis? No, that's not true at all: the story was made up by a fauxtire site that invents tales about bizarre crimes in order to attract clicks and shares. It did not happen for real.

The story originated from an article published by Huzlers on August 13, 2018 titled "Florida Man Arrested For Hanging On Traffic Light And Sh*tting On Cars Passing Underneath" (archived here) which opened:

MIAMI - A Florida man has been arrested after he allegedly climbed a traffic light on a busy intersection and began sh*tting on cars passing underneath. Roy Stern was arrested by Miami police after numerous calls about a man hanging from a traffic light...

Users on social media only saw this title, description and thumbnail:

Florida Man Arrested For Hanging On Traffic Light And Sh*tting On Cars Passing Underneath

MIAMI - A Florida man has been arrested after he allegedly climbed a traffic light on a busy intersection and began sh*tting on cars passing underneath. Roy Stern was arrested by Miami police after numerous calls about a man hanging from a traffic light...

The mugshot of "Roy Stern" already appeared in a 2014 newspaper article about meth addiction and there the man is identified as "Michael":

Video shows the devastating physical toll of drug addiction

The American addicts are aged 22 to 54 in various stages of addiction They are users of cocaine, heroin, oxycodone and crystal meth Campaign was launched by Rehabs.com to warn of dangers of drugs The horrific effect that drugs can have on addicts have been highlighted in a series of disturbing pictures and video.

That, and Huzlers styles itself as a "fauxtire" website and carries a disclaimer at the bottom of each page:

Huzlers.com is the most infamous fauxtire & satire entertainment website in the world. If it's trending on social media you'll find it here!

According to Splinter News the site is run by Pablo Reyes and David Martinez and according to Buzzfeed Reyes is involved with several other fake news websites. They tend to shy away from political stories, opting instead to write for a more "urban" audience, with stories about rappers, criminals and celebrities.
