Fact Check: Ohio State Football Coach Ryan Day Did NOT Donate More Than $3.5 Million To Flood Victims In Texas Made-Up Story

Did Ohio State football coach Ryan Day donate more than $3.5 million dollars to victims of the 2025 Texas floods? No, that's not true: No credible media organization reported that, nor did Day himself. The viral claim emerged from a website that didn't disclose the editorial team behind it and warns its readers that it functions "without warranty of any kind".

The story appeared in an article (archived here) published on July 7, 2025, by the website named "Sportnewss Livextop." The title, whose English spelling incorporated Greek letters υ and п, began:

Wheп Texas faced a devastiпg flood disaster that сaυsed severe damage aпd claimed at least 51 lives - iпcludiпg 15 сhildreп -- 1o2.

The article continued:

Ryaп Day's Remarkable Geпerosity: $3.5 million donation and $20,000 for Each Family Affected by the Texas Flood Disaster.

This is what it looked like on "Sportnewss Livextop" at the time of writing:

Flash floods took place (archived here) in Texas over the 2025 Independence Day weekend. As of the evening of July 7, 2025, the death toll exceeded 100 (archived here).

Responding to the natural disaster, several celebrities donated money (archived here), but searches across Google News (archived here) and Yahoo News (archived here) did not yield results confirming that Ohio State football coach Ryan Day (archived here) publicly spent over $3.5 million on post-flood relief efforts.

Day's account on X said nothing about it.

Accounts of the Ohio State Department of Athletics on Instagram, Facebook and X did not mention the supposed donation, either.

The website that published the article reviewed in this fact check displayed a disclaimer (archived here) saying that the website operates "without warranty of any kind" and doesn't gurantee that it will try to "meet any performance or reliability standards or be error free or that any errors or defects can or will be corrected."

This is not the first clickbait-driven, unsubstantiated claim about the 2025 Texas flash floods that went viral on social media. Lead Stories previously wrote that Eric Clapton didn't announce he would cover victims' funeral expenses and that there was no evidence confirming that Eminem donated $50 million to relief efforts.
