Is a protester's claim at a JD Vance campaign event for Sen. Roger Marshall of Kansas that Marshall sued his own patients true? Yes, that's true: Marshall is a Republican seeking re-election in the November 2026 midterms. During his decades-long career as an obstetrician-gynecologist, he sued more than 700 patients over unpaid bills, according to a New York Times analysis of Kansas court records.
The claim appeared in a post and video (archived here) by the @Acyn account on X on Sept. 14, 2026. It read:

It is difficult to understand everything the protester says early in the video before he is escorted out of the venue where Vance is speaking, but Lead Stories heard the following:
He sues his patients. ...
He sues them in court.
According to a New York Times article (archived here) published on Sept. 8, 2026, Marshall filed more than 700 lawsuits between 1998 and 2019 against patients with unpaid medical bills during that period, court records showed. The bills ranged from several thousand dollars to as little as $101. In 81 of the cases, patients were arrested after missing court dates, while Marshall's lawyers sought arrest warrants in 13 other cases in which it was unclear whether an arrest occurred. His lawyers also sought to collect the debts by garnishing patients' wages and bank accounts and routinely charged 18% annual interest.
