Does a viral image purporting to show Jeffrey Epstein hugging Melania Trump document a real-life scene? No, that's not true: Lead Stories did not find supporting evidence that it's an authentic photo. Two AI detectors pointed to the presence of generative AI in the picture.
The claim appeared in a post (archived here and here) published on X by the @mjfree account on March 28, 2026. The caption read:
Hmmmm
Here is what the image attached to the post looked like on X at the time of writing:

The image has been online at least since Feb. 14, 2026 (archived here).
Two AI detectors -- ZeroGPT and Hive Moderation -- estimated the probability of the picture being a product of generative AI at 92 percent and 98.9 percent, respectively:

The high-quality photo didn't quite match a common pattern of grainy, relatively low-resolution, unstaged snapshots from Epstein's files on the Department of Justice website.
Available photos of the disgraced financier and registered sex offender (archived here) show that he rarely posed on camera with a wide smile. One rare example of it (archived here), however, revealed that his teeth were not as perfect as in the picture in question. At least, that was the case in 2000, when that photo was taken, according to its description on Getty Images.

Lead Stories identified a 2004 photo of Epstein (archived here) in which he is seen wearing an identical black polo. His face is three-quarters turned to the camera, but the lips are closed, and there are no women around him. In another photo taken in 1997 (archived here), where Epstein hugs a fair-haired young woman, his outfit is different, and that woman is not first lady Melania Trump.
On April 9, 2026, Melania Trump denied (archived here) being Epstein's victim or friend. In her statement, she addressed "numerous fake images" on social media that attempted to connect her to Epstein, and said that such images "are completely false."
