Fact Check: Mitch McConnell's Wife Elaine Chao Did NOT Go To China After He Was Hospitalized With 'Cardiac Arrest' -- Had Been There For Days Already There

Did Sen. Mitch McConnell's wife, Elaine Chao, go to China after he was hospitalized following a "cardiac arrest"? No, that's not true: Chao, a former U.S. transportation secretary, was already in China when her husband was taken to the hospital on June 14, 2026. She met with university officials in Shanghai on June 12, 2026. McConnell's office has not disclosed the medical reason for his hospitalization or provided specifics about his current health status beyond saying that he "continues to improve."

The claim appeared in a post and image (archived here) by the Really American account on Facebook on July 6, 2026. In part, it read:

BREAKING: Elaine Chao Flew to Beijing to Meet China's Vice President Just 3 Days After McConnell's Cardiac Arrest

While Mitch McConnell was fighting to recover in a Washington hospital, his wife was 7,000 miles away meeting with one of China's most powerful officials.

This is what the post looked like on Facebook at the time of writing:

China visit

A spokesperson for Chao provided this statement to Lead Stories about her travels in a July 7, 2026, email:

The secretary was on a long-planned trip in China to support her family's philanthropic endeavors. During the trip, she met with a number of people, including the US ambassador. The Senator's health did not warrant an immediate return to the US.

Some of Chao's stops are detailed below, but her full itinerary was not available at the time of writing:

Chao met with Chinese officials at Shanghai Jiao Tong University on June 12, 2026, two days before McConnell was hospitalized. The school reported her visit on its website (archived here). Chao is in the center of the photo below, wearing a light blue suit:

On June 16, 2026, two days after McConnell's hospitalization, the Chinese People's Institute of Foreign Affairs (archived here) said that Chao met with its president, Wu Ken, in Beijing. Chao is shown on the left below:

Then, on June 17, 2026, the Embassy of the People's Republic of China in the United States of America (archived here) said Chao met with Chinese Vice President Han Zheng, the state-run Xinhua news agency reported (archived here). Again, Chao is on the left below:

Chao returned to the United States on July 7, 2026.

McConnell's health

McConnell's office has not released any further details about his condition since he was hospitalized on June 14, 2026. Lead Stories reached out to McConnell's office for an update on his condition but did not receive an immediate response.
