A Confederate battle flag flew above as the remains of South Carolina State Sen. Clementa Pinckney passed by to lie in repose inside the the state capitol in Columbia Wednesday.

CNN reporter Victor Blackwell tweeted a photo of Sen. Pinckney's casket on a horse-drawn wagon as it passed by the controversial flagpole, which is next to a Confederate soldier statue.

President Obama and Vice President Biden, both friends of Pinckney, are set to attend the slain minister's funeral Friday.

Pinckney and eight others were killed when a white man -- identified by police as Dylann Roof, 21 -- opened fire during a Bible study session in Charleston's Emanuel AME Church last Wednesday. He reportedly hoped to trigger a race war in the United States with his terror attack.
