Joe Biden gave the most direct indication that he would like to enter the 2016 race for the White House when he told an Atlanta group that he "would not hesitate," but he wants to make sure "my family and I have the emotional energy to run."

Sources close to the vice president have previously said Biden was personally inclined to run, but his wife was reluctant.

"If I can reach that conclusion that we can do it in a fashion that would still make it viable, I would not hesitate to do it," Biden said at in remarks at Ahavath Achim Synagogue. "I will be straight forward with you. The most relevant factor in my decision is whether my family and I have the emotional energy to run. The honest to God answer is I just don't know."

"Can I do it? Can my family undertake what is an arduous commitment?" Biden said.

Close friends say Biden's son Beau, who died of brain cancer in May, had a dying wish that his father would wage a presidential campaign.
