Cop Fired For Dragging Girl In S.C. High School: Video Sickens Sheriff

  • by: Alan Duke

The South Carolina school cop caught on video slamming and dragging a high school student across a class room floor has been fired. Richland County Sheriff Leon Lott said Deputy Ben Fields violated department rules.

Videos of the incident caused a viral outrage and a debate over how school police should handle disruptive students.

"We must not lose sight that this whole incident started by this student," Sheriff Lott said as he announced Fields' firing. "She is responsible for initiating this action. Some responsibility falls on her."

He noted that the teen attacked the officer first. "When the officer puts his hands on her initially, she reaches up and she pops the officer with her fist," he said.

Sheriff Lott told reporters he "wanted to throw up" as he watched the videos, which were recorded by other students on their smart phones.
