Joe Biden decided the window "has closed" for a successful presidential run in 2016 and he will not be a candidate.
The vice president, with his wife and President Obama by his side, made the announcement in the White House Rose Garden Wednesday, October 21, 2016.
Biden, who has spent much of the year mourning the death of his son Beau, has been considering a challenge of frontrunner Hillary Clinton. He used his announcement to make a pitch for a more constructive relationship between Democrats and Republicans in government "for the sake of the country."
"I believe that we have to end the divisive partisan politics that is ripping this country apart, and I think we can," he said Biden. "It's mean spirited, it's petty, and it's gone on for much too long. I don't believe, like some do, that it's naive to talk to Republicans. I don't think we should look at Republicans as our enemies. They are our opposition. They're not our enemies."
