Police Officer WAS NOT Gunned Down in Broad Daylight, Shooter DID NOT Cite Beyoncé

Fact Check

There is a NOT TRUE story on a known hoax/fake website with the header "Police Officer Gunned Down in Broad Daylight, Shooter Cites Beyonce". Although it comes from a hoax website many people don't read the fine print at the bottom of the page. Some of the fake stories out there are humorous and harmless, but then you have a NOT TRUE story like this. This kind of story is an example of irresponsible journalism, the kind that creates unwarranted racism and hate.

The NOT TRUE story goes on to state:

A Florida juvenile has been apprehended and is in police custody following an exchange of gunfire that resulted in the death of Deputy Sheriff Roger Davies. The shooter, 17 year-old DeShawn Jackson, a well known "activist" with the local Black Lives Matter movement, had been motivated by the Super Bowl performance of Beyonce Knowles according to testimony provided during the arraignment hearing.

The NOT TRUE story continues:

According to ABC affiliate WPLG, multiple eyewitnesses at the scene of the crime provided details consistent with the testimony heard before the court. Shanice Williams, a neighbor of Jackson, had this to say, "I have known DeShawn for years and never knew him to be a violent person, but his behavior changed following the death of Trayvon Martin and has continued to become more militant. More recently he has been running around with the Black Lives Matter crowd and seems fascinated by the Black Panthers. I think Beyonce's performance just sort of set him off."

The NOT TRUE story even goes as far as to make reference to REAL websites such as The Officer Down Memorial Page and The National Sheriffs' Association site. Pretty BOLD for a completely made up, NOT TRUE story.

Here's the summary of the NOT TRUE press release by The National Sheriffs' Association:

The National Sheriffs' Association issued a press release last week warning those in law enforcement of such action in direct response to the performance of "Formation" which paid tribute to the militant group Black Panthers. The release read, in part: "The senseless killing of four law enforcement officers just this week - on the heels of the anti-police "entertainment" at the Sunday Super Bowl halftime show - reminds us that the men and women in law enforcement take a solemn oath that includes putting their lives on the line every day to protect our citizens."
