Fact Check: Viral Clip Of Old 'American Idol' Audition Does NOT Show Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene Not Her

Does a viral clip of an old "American Idol" audition show U.S. Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene? No, that's not true: The woman in the video "obviously isn't her," a spokesman for Greene told Lead Stories. The woman belting her heart out was identified on the show as Stefanie Sugarman, a then-23-year-old from Los Angeles.

The claim appeared in a tweet (archived here) published by "Far Left Kyle" on September 4, 2022. The tweet, which included the audition clip, opened:

Marjorie Taylor Greene's try out for the first season of American Idol under a stage name lmao.

This is what the post looked like on Twitter at the time of writing:

Lead Stories reached out to Nick Dyer, Greene's spokesman, to ask about the claim. He emphatically denied it. In an email, dated September 5, 2022, he wrote:

It doesn't look like her and obviously isn't her.

Indeed, the woman in the audition clip was identified on the show as Stefanie Sugarman, a then-23-year-old from Los Angeles. Greene hails from Milledgeville, Georgia. Additionally, at the time the clip was recorded, in 2002, Greene would have been 27 years old. The original age limit for "American Idol" was reportedly 24 years old.

Lead Stories reached out to "American Idol" to ask about the claim. We will update this story, as appropriate, if we receive a response.
