Fact Check: Image Trump Posted as 'Retribution' Against Iran Does NOT Show July 2026 U.S. Bombing -- It Is June 2025 Israeli Attack Old Photo

Does an image posted by President Donald Trump on his Truth Social account as evidence of "retribution" against Iran show a U.S. bombing in July 2026? No, that's not true: The photo shows a previous attack on Iran by Israel that took place more than a year earlier, on June 15, 2025. Trump got the image from another social media account that has since acknowledged its mistake.

The claim appeared in a post and image (archived here) by the @realDonaldTrump account on Truth Social on July 8, 2026. It read:

This is in retribution for yesterday's bombing of ships by Iran. If it happens again, it will get much worse!

This is what the image looked like at the time of writing:

The image Trump shared is a screenshot of a since-deleted post by the Open Source Intel (@Osint613) account (archived here) on X on July 8, 2026. It read:

OH WOW

Chabahar, Iran

The photo included in the post is from an Israeli attack (archived here) on the Shahran oil depot on June 15, 2025, in Tehran, Iran. The image below shows a wider shot of the same scene following the strike:

In another post (archived here) on X on July 8, 2026, Open Source Intel noted its mistake, saying the photo was old:

We posted an image of a strike that circulated in Iranian accounts that was inaccurately attributed to tonight.

Our mistake...caught and corrected.

We post hundreds of times a day in real time. We'll occasionally get one wrong.

Unfortunately it was widely shared before we had the chance to make the correction.
What matters is what happens next: we own it, we fix it, we move on.

It's a big lesson for us in responsibility that we will certainly learn and grow from. That cannot be overstated.

Back to work. TYH

TYH likely means "Thank You Hashem," a common sign-off in some online communities.

The post included a screenshot of the Trump post, citing Open Source Intel. This is what the image looked like at the time of writing:

The United States launched airstrikes (archived here) against Iran on July 8. Iran responded by attacking U.S. allies Bahrain, Kuwait, and Qatar, raising new concerns about a temporary ceasefire meant to help end the war in the Persian Gulf.
