Fact Check: FAKE Video Shows A Ship Swamped By A Massive Wave -- It Is AI-Generated Made With AI

Does a real video show a large ship completely engulfed by a massive wave crashing over the bow? No, that's not true: Two AI detection tools -- Hive Moderation and Sightengine -- determined the video was likely AI-generated, with Hive Moderation identifying ByteDance's Seedance2 as the probable source. Earlier copies of the video found online since at least March 2026 were labeled as AI-generated content, though the video's original creator remains unknown.

The video appeared in a post (archived here) by @BroWire_ on X on Oct. 5, 2026. It read:

I still can't figure out how they managed to cross this ocean with medieval technology.

This is what a screenshot of the video in the post looked like at the time of writing:

Lead Stories uploaded the video to Hive Moderation (archived here). The AI-Generated Content Detection Tool determined the video was 81.1% likely to be AI-generated (pictured below). The tool also pointed to Seedance2, the AI video generation model developed by ByteDance, as the potential source of the video.

Lead Stories then uploaded the video thumbnail image to Sightengine (archived here). This AI-powered detection platform has media detection tools which work across many image generators including Seedance (archived here). Sightengine gave the image a rating of 99% likely to be AI-generated (pictured below).

A reverse image search for the thumbnail image with Google Lens (archived here) shows the video has been circulating on social media for months. An early copy of the video was published on Instagram on March 14, 2026, by the account @innovate.oi (archived here). The Instagram post is labeled AI, and the account focuses on AI and innovation. The caption (embedded below) reads largely like an AI generation prompt; however, remarks about the clip's virality suggest it was circulating on social media before this Instagram post. It reads:

The post features showing a dramatic scene in the middle of a stormy ocean. From the perspective of a low-flying helicopter, a massive cargo ship or oil tanker can be seen struggling against huge, towering waves.
The sea appears dark and extremely rough, with powerful waves crashing against the vessel and thick white foam spreading across the surface. At one moment, a giant wave rises and completely covers the front part of the ship, making it briefly disappear beneath the water before emerging again.
The sky is gray and overcast, creating a tense and dangerous atmosphere as the ship battles the violent sea conditions. The clip has quickly gone viral on social media, gaining around 8.9 million views and 89K likes within a day.
The footage is AI-generated, designed to simulate an intense ocean storm scenario.
