Donald Trump is the frontrunner among Republican presidential contenders in the minds of North Carolina voters, according to the latest Public Policy Poll conducted in the first week of July.
The numbers add up to trouble for Jeb Bush because of his high unfavorable rating in the Tar Heel State, which is second only to New Jersey Gov. Chris Christies, the poll said. Trump's favorability rating is 55/32, compared to 43/35 for Bush.
Hillary Clinton's previous commanding lead among Democrats slipped a bit with Sen. Bernie Sanders benefiting. Clinton still has 55% compared to Sanders' 20% in North Carolina in the PPP.
"Donald Trump's momentum just keeps on building," the PPP news release said. "He's the top choice of Republican primary voters in the state, getting 16% to 12% for Jeb Bush and Scott Walker, 11% for Mike Huckabee, 9% for Ben Carson and Marco Rubio, 7% for Rand Paul, 6% for Ted Cruz, 5% for Chris Christie, 4% for Carly Fiorina, 2% for Rick Perry, 1% each for Lindsey Graham, Bobby Jindal, and Rick Santorum, and less than 1% each for John Kasich and George Pataki."
The poll summary said Trump is seen favorably by 66% of "very conservative" voters and only 24% have a negative view of him. Bush is struggling among North Carolina conservatives with only 37% seeing him favorably and 44% having a negative opinion of him.
