Dutch newspaper Noordhollands Dagblad reports on an incident in the refugee shelter in Zaandam where a Syrian refugee tried to set himself on fire. Another refugee in the center managed to shoot this video:
According to reports, the man in question hails from Aleppo in Syria. In the shouting that can be heard in the video he apparently says he wants to go back to his children. Other refugees in the camp told journalists that the man's family live in Turkey where they were having "difficulties". Just prior to the incident the man allegedly received news from Dutch authorities that he would only be able to travel to Turkey in a few weeks.
In the video, the man is seen to ignite a piece of fabric and then trying to set his coat on fire with it. Bystanders pull away the fabric and smother the flames with a blanket before anything worse can happen. Someone else then rushes in with a fire extinguisher and puts out the burning piece of textile still on the ground. It is not clear at this time if the man was seriously injured or not.
