Fake News: French Interior Minister Did NOT Announce Plan To Release Calm Jihadists to Make Room for Yellow Vests in Prisons

Did French Interior Minister Christophe Castaner announce that 'calm' jihadi's would be released from prisons to make room for yellow vest protesters? No, that's not true: the story came from a Belgian satire site, it is not real. The story originated from an article published on December 8, 2018 titled "Nous allons libérer des djihadistes calmés pour faire de la place dans les prisons pour les gilets jaunes" (archived here) which opened:

Le Ministre de l'intérieur a annoncé ce matin qu'il ferait des petites pirouettes avec un renard bleu et qu'il achèterait avec plaisir des chocolatines à 15 centimes dès qu'il ferait un peu plus beau.

Users on social media only saw this title, description and thumbnail:

"Nous allons libérer des djihadistes calmés pour faire de la place dans les prisons pour les gilets jaunes"

Le Journal Du Nord (nordpresse.be) is a satirical website that was set up to mock the (real) sudpresse.be (since renamed sudinfo.be), a Belgian media group. They were involved in a lawsuit with each other in 2017 which was eventually won by NordPresse. It is run by Vincent Flibustier who also offers media training about fake news on his website, he clearly knows what he is talking about.

They have sort of a disclaimer in their header that reads:

Toute l'information vérifiée par nos analystes simiens

Translated: "all information verified by our monkey analysts".
