Fact Check: Iowa Gov. Reynolds Was NOT Interrupted By Trump Chants At Rally Where She Endorsed DeSantis Edited Audio

Was Iowa Gov. Kim Reynolds interrupted by Trump chants during the speech in which she endorsed Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis for the presidential race? No, that's not true: The audio of the November 6, 2023, speech has been edited to include chants and remarks from a different event that took place on August 12, 2023. The "we want Trump" chants did not happen during the endorsement speech but were from a speech three months prior.

The claim appeared in a video (archived here) on X, formerly known as Twitter, on November 6, 2023, under the title "That went well." It opened with Reynolds saying this:

And in short, what I love most about Ron is he gets things done

This is what the post looked like on X at the time of writing:

The 26-second video in the post shows Reynolds at a rally in the state capital of Des Moines on November 6, 2023. Beginning at eight seconds into the video the chant "we love Trump" can be heard and a voice says:

So we'll stop, we'll stop until you do. Thank you. Hey, you know what? You know what? We're in Iowa and in Iowa we're Iowa nice.

The crowd did not chant in support of former President Donald Trump nor did Reynolds respond by telling the crowd she would stop until they stopped during the November 6, 2023, event. NBC News covered the event (archived here) and did not report that Reynolds was heckled with "we want Trump" chants.

Beginning at the 3:10 mark in the original video posted on DeSantis' official X account (archived here) at 7:43 p.m. on November 6, 2023, Reynolds does say, "And in short, what I love most about Ron is he gets things done." The crowd at the event cheers and claps and does not chant about Trump.

She continues saying, "To be quite honest, to be quite honest, he is one of the most effective leaders that I have ever seen."

In the post on X, her mouth does not match the dialogue, "So we'll stop, we'll stop until you do. Thank you. Hey, you know what? You know what? We're in Iowa and in Iowa we're Iowa nice."

Here is the video posted on DeSantis' X account:

Reynolds' speech in its entirety, and the crowd's reaction, can be seen and heard on C-SPAN here (archived here), with her entering the stage at 23:30. Chants for Trump are never heard from the crowd and she does not admonish the crowd.

She did respond to hecklers during an event with DeSantis during the Iowa State Fair on August 12, 2023. Video from the event published by Forbes on YouTube (archived here) shows Reynolds saying, "Hey, you know what? You know what? We're in Iowa and in Iowa we're Iowa nice," at 38 seconds. Then at 50 seconds, she says, "So we'll stop, we'll stop until you do."

An August 12, 2023, New York Times article titled (archived here), "At the Iowa State Fair, DeSantis Can't Seem to Catch a Break," reported that "a small group of liberal protesters with cowbells and whistles sought to interrupt the conversation with Ms. Reynolds."
