Fact Check: Trump Did NOT Post On Truth Social He's Renaming New Mexico As New America Satire

Did President Trump say in a Truth Social post on April 23, 2025 that he would sign an order to change the name of New Mexico to New America? No, that's not true: The post does not exist on Trump's Truth Social timeline and there is no evidence it ever did. The post includes the claim that the president visited Albuquerque, New Mexico, earlier in April, but he did not. This appears to be a satirical post playing off of Trump's real Executive Order renaming the Gulf of Mexico as the Gulf of America.

The claim appeared in a post (archived here) on X shared on April 24, 2025, featuring a screenshot of the purported Truth Social post and the caption "This is satire right?" The text on the screenshot read:

After visiting the beautiful city of Albuquerque earlier this month, I decided that it is disrespectful to America to have a state called New Mexico. It is surrounded by America so it should be called America. I plan to sign an Executive Order renaming the Land of Enchantment New America! MAKE AMERICA GREAT AGAIN!

This is what the post looked like at the time of writing:

A search of Trump's Truth Social timeline did not find such a post. A Google search for "Trump AND New America" also turned up no evidence the president had recently floated the plan to rename New Mexico.

Another major clue is the post's claim that Trump visited New Mexico in April. Lead Stories reviewed the president's schedule and found no such trip. A Google search for "Trump Albuquerque" also failed to find such a visit.
