Fact Check: FAKE Image Of Gregory Bovino Shows Plaid Shirt With Earring When He Actually Wore A Green Uniform Edited Image

Does a real photo show Greg Bovino wearing a plaid shirt and gold hoop earring? No, that's not true: This photo has been edited. The original photo was taken by an Associated Press photographer at a news conference in Minneapolis on Jan. 20, 2026. It showed Border Patrol commander Gregory Bovino with no earring, wearing an olive drab uniform shirt with a badge and US Border Patrol patch.

The altered image was posted (archived here) on Facebook by Costa Meme Bureau on Jan. 26, 2026. The post was captioned:

Using Google Lens, Lead Stories was able to identify the original image. It appears in a Jan. 26, 2026 article published on cbs8.com (archived here) titled, "Border chief Gregory Bovino, some agents to leave Minnesota Tuesday". The image came from an earlier news conference and was captioned:

Lead Stories created a GIF (pictured below) by overlaying the altered image with the original Associated Press photo to show how it has been changed:
