Does a real video show a vintage Volkswagen Beetle outpulling a Tesla Cybertruck in a racetrack matchup? No, that's not true: This video contains many signs that it was made with AI. Aside from the unlikely outcome, the crowd in the background is making unnatural glitchy cheering movements and a large number of them are wearing similar outfits. The clip originated from an account which posts many videos with AI labels, but this video had no disclaimers.
The claim appeared in a post (archived here) by the @myshoebox_elena account on Threads on Oct. 30, 2026. It read:
German engineering versus American fascism!!! The irony!!
The Threads post shared an Oct. 19, 2026, video from the Instagram account @evanrosenman (archived here). This is what a screenshot of the video in the post looked like at the time of writing:

The video was also posted to a Facebook account linked to the same creator, @EvanEraTV on Oct. 19, 2026 (archived here). Neither video was posted with an AI disclaimer and both the Facebook and Instagram posts were captioned:
Watch this Tesla Cybertruck VS Volkswagen Beetle
Lead Stories uploaded a nine-second clip from this video to several AI detection platforms, SynthID.com, Hive Moderation and Sightengine. None of the tools detected signals that the video was AI-generated. There was no SynthID watermark detected (archived here). Hive's AI-generated Content Detection Tool rated the clip 0.6% likely to be AI-generated (archived here), Sightengine gave a rating of 0% (archived here). The negative reading does not mean the video is real, just that the detection tools were unable to find a signal.
While it is not possible to calculate the outcome of a fictional matchup, for reference, a vintage Beetle, in the 1969 Volkswagen catalog (archived here) was advertised to weigh about 1,808 pounds, have 53 horsepower, and was 158.7 inches long. A Cybertruck today, weighing about 6,863 pounds, has 600-845 horsepower depending on model, and is 223.7 inches long (archived here).
The video has several glitches typical of AI-generated material, notably the crowd in the background. More than half of the people in the crowd are wearing cargo shorts, and many, including the starter, are wearing black logo T-shirts. It is common in AI-generated videos for people in the background to be rendered as stereotypes. When the people cheer, many are making unnatural jerking motions with their arms. The GIF below shows a highlight as one man, in a gray shirt and black cargo shorts, appears to develop an extra arm as he cheers.

The Beetle in the clip has the number 53 on the door (pictured below).

The number 53 is not random; it represents Herbie the Love Bug, the famous car from a series of Disney movies (archived here). This car inspired many to make reproduction and tribute cars. There is an aftermarket (archived here) for these decal numbers and stripes. The original and red, white, and blue Herbie stripes are positioned off-center to the driver's side of the white car (pictured below). The decal kit comes with four numbers, front, back, and both sides, and three stripes to cover the front hood, roof, and back.
In the AI-generated video, the car is yellow and the stripes are the wrong color too, black and white. There appears to be no stripe or number on the front hood, and the stripe on the back of the car is out of alignment with the stripe on the roof. This error appears to have been generated by an AI model that picked up on a vague association between Beetles and the number 53 without regard for the backstory or the attention to detail that goes into making a reproduction car.

Lead Stories found additional AI-generated videos copying this Beetle versus Cybertruck theme. One video posted on YouTube (archived here) on Oct. 20, 2026, (pictured below) features a miniaturized VW Beetle with similar decals shown in the @EvanEraTV video clip. The video has a disclaimer which reads:
This video is an AI recreation for entertainment, not a real vehicle performance test.

Another version featuring a plain yellow VW was published on Instagram (archived here) by the account @serhaterkaltv on Oct. 20, 2026. It has an AI content disclaimer added by Instagram. It reads:
Content in this post may have been created with AI
This is based on a signal added by the tool used to create the content. This signal typically identifies content that was entirely AI-generated instead of content that was only modified with AI.
