The Confederate flag came down from the South Carolina capitol grounds -- but only for a short time -- when a woman climbed the pole and cut the controversial battle banner down Saturday.
The woman, identified in a YouTube video of the incident posted by the group Blackbird as Bree Newsome, was handcuffed and taken away by state police after she decended from the pole.
The take down was apparently organized by the group, with members cheering Newsome on as she completed the mission.
"We could not sit by and watch the victims of the Charleston Massacre be laid to rest while the inspiration for their deaths continue to fly above their caskets," the group said in a statement.
President Obama called for the flag's removal during his dramatic eulogy for Sen. Clementa Pinckney, one of none people slain inside Charleston's Emanuel AME Church by a man who allegedly wanted to start a race war. The state's governor is also pushing the legislature to vote the flag down.
The flag was placed at a Confederate memorial on the state capitol grounds 15 years ago as a compromise to take a Confederate flag from atop the capitol. That flag was put in place in 1961 for the 100th anniversary of South Carolina's secession from the Union and the start of the American Civil War.
The fallen flag is now in custody of state officials, although it was unclear when it would be restored to its infamous position at the memorial.
