Fake News Site Freedum Junkshun Renamed God Luvs America Most After Facebook Ban

Fact Check

  • by: Maarten Schenk

Earlier this week we reported that fake/satire site "Freedum Junkshun" had been put on a blacklist by Facebook so it became impossible to share links to it on the social network. This followed the earlier ban on The Resistance: The Last Line of Defense, another site from the same network that simply switched domain names and has been back in business ever since.

It seems the same thing is happening with "Freedum Junkshun": the site has already been renamed "God Luvs America Most" and it is now hosted at http://godluvsamericamost.org/. This isn't the first time the site changes names: in our archives we found references to http://freedomcrossroads.us, a site by the same owner that disappeared shorty before Freedum Junkshun came online. (Perhaps this was a move to avoid confusion with the real Christian conservative site http://freedomcrossroads.com?)

All the renamed sites are publishing satirical fake news stories designed to rile up conservatives into sharing them so they can be made fun of in the comments according to site owner Christopher Blair. Articles from Blair's sites frequently get copied by "real" fake news sites who often omit the satire disclaimer and any other hints the stories are fake. Blair has tried to get these sites shut down in the past but new ones keep cropping up.

Recently Freedum Junkshun was the center of a controversy as it falsely accused fallen soldier La David T. Johnson of desertion in a fake article and used his real photo. The site later published an apology and removed the link to the article from their Facebook page but the original story is still up on the website with no modifications or disclaimers (archived snapshot here).

A similar thing happened with The Resistance: The Last Line of Defense. That site used a picture of a (real) Canadian imam in a fake story about a Texas mosque refusing to help hurricane victims because they weren't muslims. In that case the site did update the original article by swapping the image for another imam from Lebanon.

As of the time of writing, God Luvs America Most is still sporting Freedum Junkshun's satire disclaimer:

ABOUT FREEDUM JUNKSHUN

We believe that there is nothing more precious than the mind of an aging conservative. Here we gather a boatload of bullhonkey, works of pure satirical fiction, to give the fist-shakers of the world a reason to hate. Reality is often in the eye of the beholder. You won't find any of it here.
Join the fun in the comments on our Facebook page where you too can watch David Hasselhoff running over someone's poodle magically transformed into a crime against humanity by Barack Obama or yet another murder the Clintons got away with.

We expect that to change shortly.
