Fact Check: Tim Walz Did NOT Mislead People About His Dog -- Brown & White Dog In A Post Is NOT His, Black Lab Scout IS Dogged Truth

Did Tim Walz mislead people about his dog being a black Labrador when a photo shows him with a completely different dog? No, that's not true: The image of Walz with a dog that is not a black Lab is one he posted on his own social media account, saying it was a nice day at the dog park. He posted a video that also showed his own dog Scout in the footage. Walz never said the brown and white dog was his dog.

The claim appeared in a post (archived here) on X, formerly known as Twitter, on August 26, 2024. It said:

What the hell?

This is what the post looked like on X at the time of writing:

Minnesota Gov. Walz, who was selected as Kamala Harris's running mate in the 2024 presidential election, did not mislead people about the true identity of his furry friend. An image posted on X shows Walz with a brown and white dog that does not belong to him. It was a dog he was petting while at a dog park with his dog Scout, a black Lab mix.

Walz posted a video on his Instagram page on October 22, 2022, that showed Scout and the brown and white dog. Walz is seen petting his dog and asking "are you jealous?" of his petting the other dog.

The dog in the video is the same as the one Walz posted on his X account (archived here as the original has been deleted). Here is a screenshot of that tweet:
